All the films directed by him from Swayamvaram to Oru pennum randanum were screened at several international film festivals. He won several state, national and international film awards. He got Padma shri in 1984 and Padma vibhushan in 2006. He started his artistic life as an actor in amateur pays when was eight years old and later he shifted his base to writing and direction.
After securing a degree in economics and public administration in 1961 from Gandhi gram rural institute, he worked as a government officer in Tamil Nadu. In 1962 he left his job to study screen writing and direction from Pune film institute. After the completion of course he established Chithralekha film Society and Chalachithra sahakarana sangam. The organisation was the first film society in Kerala.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan has scripted and directed eleven feature film and about thirty short films and documentaries. His great work Swayamvaram was a precious one in Malayalam film history. The film was screened widely in various film festivals held in Moscow, Melbourne, London and Paris.

Adoors third future film won him the British film institute award for the most original and imaginative film of 1982.
